Reading Rocks Club!
Reading Rocks is an at-home reading incentive program that promotes reading for all pre-K through 5th grade students. Students climb from base camp to the top of Mt. Jones as they progress through the six different reading levels. To start, all students in grades pre-K through 5th receive a colored card with 20 squares. Parents initial a square each time their child reads outside of school for the required amount of time:
• 10 minutes for grades Pre-K, K and 1;
• 20 minutes for grades 2 and 3; and
• 30 minutes for grades 4 and 5.
Especially for the younger grades, we encourage parents to read to their children to fill in the required time. When all 20 squares are filled, students turn in their card and receive a new card for the next level. Students receive prizes for each level including a Reading Medal for anyone reaching the top, Level 6. We created a giant mountain climbing visual outside the library for students and parents to check reading progress.
